A Living Legend is an album by "Mother" Maybelle Carter made in 1966, featuring Mother Maybelle performing both instrumental and vocal songs, with backing vocals from her daughters.
From the original liner notes:
How do you define "A LIVING LEGEND?" Merely to list Mother Maybelle Carter's lasting contributions to the music that millions of Americans love best would be to present only half her story.
Since 1927, when she began recording with A.P. Carter and his wife, Sarah, until today, Maybelle's world has centered around Country music. Her constant, unselfish efforts to communicate this "music of the soul" has earned her an immortal place in its history. She is one of the few people who helped bring Country music to all America, and the world. Wonderful to say, she is still going as strong as ever, as this newly recorded album gloriously testifies.
Back in the early days, Maybelle originated a style of guitar playing that has become synonymous with Country music. She evolved a unique "sound" that has since been admire and adapted by other great professional artists, and amateurs, too. To become such a vital influence in one's own lifetime is a seldom-realized dream. For many years, Mother Maybelle Carter has been such an artist.
Many of the songs in this album were made famous when Mother Maybelle was a part of the original Carter Family, and she composed some of them herself. Although a few date back some years, they seem new when she performs them. In every one you'll discover the same tenderness, laughter, sorrow and joy that Mother Maybelle finds in them.
To all of us who know and love her, Mother Maybelle Carter not only stands alone in her field, but bears a name that means "Country music." She is indeed A LIVING LEGEND.
