Grammy-nominated Banda Mantiqueira, a 13-piece instrumental ensemble based in Sao Paulo, puts a unique spin on the big band tradition with a program of straight-ahead fare and wholly Brazilian performances.
The group presents seven extended compositions that range from a joyful, energetic cover of Joã Bosco's samba hit "Linha de Passe" to an orchestral interpretation of "Carinhoso," a venerable standard by the late composer Pixinguinha, regarded as Brazil's Duke Ellington, and a sonorous interpretation of Jobim's "Insensatez."
Banda Mantiqueira will be a revelation for many jazz fans, demonstrating that sophisticated big band arranging, unique soloing and tight ensemble work fits perfectly with a strong Brazilian rhythmic groove.
Reviews"'Aldeia' is the debut CD of the Banda Matiqueira. A lively Brazilian instrumental combo filled with plenty of work on horns -- done at a level that's partly jazz, but which also links to older Brazilian instrumental traditions as well! The group features a brace of trumpets and an especially strong sax section -- sometimes working in deep colors and tones that take us back to the Kenton years, but other times flowing out with a freer, lighter quality that almost reminds us a bit of Hermeto Pascoal." - Dusty Groove
