Northern Lights
Northern Germany was a center of organ design in the seventeenth century, and this pinpoints this center in the town of Norden. It is the result of exploratory borings in musical aesthetics in a region that not only delighted Bach but even today is regarded as an organ mecca.

Radiant Sound
The famous Arp Schnitger organ in the Ludgerikirche in Norden, the largest and most important in East Frisia, radiates in three directions: while the Gothic choir space is filled with resonance from the Oberwerk and develops a cathedral sound, the Hauptwerk has its greatest presence in the transept, and the pedal tower is directed toward the Romanesque nave.

Rich Palette
Among the composers who have availed themselves of this priceless organ's rich sound palette we find a number of elegant individualists such as Arnolt Schlick, better known composers including Georg Böhm and Matthias Weckmann, and the great keyboard geniuses William Byrd, Samuel Scheidt, Dietrich Buxtehude, and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Full Advantage
Arnolt Schlick's Ascendo ad patrem meum is a curiosity: of its ten voices, four are to be played in the pedal! Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata in F major is heard here in an arrangement by Johann Gottfried Walther. The lavish sound spectrum of Hauptwerk, Rückpositiv, pedal organ, and Oberwerk lends the composition a plastic effect, and this effect is enhanced all the more by the radiant mean-tone temperament of the organ. And Dietrich Buxtehude's Canzona benefits in its own way from the splendid color of this instrument - just listen to the chirping birds…

Mixed Doubles
Agnes Luchterhandt studied church music in Hanover and Groningen before becoming the music director and organist at the Arp Schnitger organ in the Ludgerikirche in Norden in 1999. Thiemo Janssen studied in Hanover, Lyons, and Hamburg and also serves as organist at the Ludgerikirche in Norden. In 2004 he initiated the Arp Schnitger Summer Course in Norden together with Agnes Luchterhandt.
