Anton Bruckner (1824-1896): Symphony No. 9 in D minor

Lucerne Festival Orchestra
Claudio Abbado, conductor

The last concert Claudio Abbado conducted took place in Lucerne on 26 August 2013. It had not been planned as his last, since Abbado, for all his failing energy, still had a host of projects he wanted to realize. But as fate would have it, he gave that final demonstration of his artistry with two unfinished symphonies, one by Schubert, the other by Bruckner. Bruckner's symphony is featured on this recording.

This was a favorite pairing of Abbado’s, and one he had programmed in the past, but in the circumstances of the concert it took on a symbolic significance that would not have been lost on any of the players or audience present. Schubert’s B minor symphony and, even more so, Bruckner’s Ninth are works that look into infinity. The last part of the closing Adagio in the Bruckner, with its abstract, mystical qualities, epitomizes the idea that music is the expression of a life spent looking ahead, out over the fence that bars our way and blocks our view.

Recorded live August 21-26, 2013 at the Concert Hall of the Lucerne KKL in Luzern, Switzerland.
