Synthesizing jazz with the astutely improvised musical forms of South Asia, the Indo-Pak Coalition transcends any preconception of Indo-jazz fusion. The trio, led by Indian-American saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, along with Pakistani-American guitarist Rez Abbasi and percussion star Dan Weiss, has blazed trails while redefining jazz as an inclusive multicultural music for this millennium that highlights the reality of global citizenry.

Agrima is a new suite for this trio that will incorporate electronics and live audio processing as well as an inventive hybrid percussion construct seamlessly integrating tabla and elements of the Western drum set. Agrima is made possible due to Mahanthappa winning a Chamber Music America composer’s grant, part of the New Jazz Works program supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. This new work proves to be an amalgamation of ideas and notions that blurs the lines of genre, discipline, and ethnicity, in ways that are vital to the advancement of music as an American art form.  Perhaps more importantly, this work will serve as a form of contemporary social expression in addressing the current state of multicultural thought and progress.
