The pre-eminent lutenist of his day, John Dowland was an almost exact contemporary of William Shakespeare. This first volume of his complete lute music, which comprises about one hundred solo pieces, includes the 7 Fantasies (or Fancyes), free-form, improvisatory works in which the composer gives free rein to his fertile imagination and wonderful melodic gift.

Reviews
The leading British lutenist has committed the 100 solo lute works of John Dowland to CD. One is immediately struck by the clarity and freshness of his simple tone on two differently tuned instruments, built by Paul Thomson in the 1990s. North's programme includes the seven Fantasies, profound Italianate pieces unlike anything Dowland's compatriots had composed. They are interspersed with the Jumps, Jigs, Things and Nothings of the composer's lighter side that North varies and ornaments with consummate finger-twisting skill. A collector's item. - Rick Jones, The Times
