The best foreign language adaptation of a Broadway musical ever
Brel’s French translation of the Broadway hit Man of La Mancha takes an excellent score to new heights. You need not speak French, to be impressed.
Brel’s version of “The Impossible Dream” is even more dynamic and inspiring than Richard Kiley’s take from the original Broadway cast recording which made its way onto the pop charts thereby immortalizing the musical.
Brel’s translation is true to the original except for the addition of the Knight of the Mirrors (“Le Chevalier Aux Miroirs”) scene from the original score — missing from the Broadway album —which adds depth here.
Jacques Brel and Joan Diener, reprising her Broadway recording role of Aldonza with a markedly more intense performance, both give landmark performances.
