The above percussionist presents themes by Jobim, Chico, and André Victor Corrêa, in addition to a few composed by him. Chico Buarque participates in “Iracema”.
After a 41 year long career initiated in 1965, when he joined the Sergio Mendes group, Chico Batera launches now “Lume”, his sixth solo work, through Biscoito Fino. Solo,in this case, is only relative; a percussionist is never completely alone since rhythm, in music, implies gathering and generosity. He is ccompanied by Kiko Continentino (piano), and Luiz Alves (bass), with the participation of Marcos Nimrichter (accordion) and of his blue-eyed namesake –Chico Buarque–, who interprets “Iracema voou”. That song, together with themes by Antonio Carlos Jobim, André Victor Corrêa, Contentino, and Batera himself, form the repertory of this record.
Batera’s “Lume”, ignites rhythmic and melodic inroads – Chico plays the battery and the vibraphone during the whole record – into samba and choro, mingled with elements of jazz and Latin music. Right in the beginning, on of the most traditional choro themes, “André de sapato novo” is re-created with traces of samba and in a jazz-like atmosphere. Similar influences are traceable in two of Jobim’s uncharacteristic compositions: “Quebra-pedra”, and “Mojave”, which here dialogue vigorously with jazz and baião.
“Samba e amor”, by Chico Buarque, gains here a cool atmosphere based on a vibraphone solo which recalls the great moments of the"Modern Jazz Quartet". In the second part of this song, the time accelerates emulating the “rush hour in the city” as described in Buarque’s original lyrics, before returning to the cadenced languor appropriate to soothe lovers during the fire at day-break and in the mornings. “Iracema voou” counts with the voice of Chico Buarque as a further element in the instrumentality of this song in which the melancholy is expressed by Nimrichter’s Argentinean-jazz accordion.
Pianist Kiko Continentino contributes with two of his songs: the samba-groove “No sapato”, which displays a bass with bow solo by Luis Alves, and the samba-jazz “Pulando a cerca”. Batera himself also presents some of his themes: the samba-choro “Acaba logo com esse choro”, which contains accordion, piano and vibraphone solos; the sambalada (acombination of samba and ballad) “Afinidades”; and the sambolero (a combinatiom of samba and bolero) “Teia 2”. This album was recorded in the studios Castelo, in Niterói, and Biscoito Fino, in Rio.
