This is Mahler's Symphony No. 9 (1908-10) from the Complete Mahler Symphonies, Live. The New York Philharmonic is celebrating Lorin Maazel’s seven-year tenure as Music Director, 2002-2009, with the release of a set of new digital recordings. Ever since Gustav Mahler was appointed the New York Philharmonic’s Conductor in 1909, the Orchestra has had a strong connection to his music. One hundred years later, Mr. Maazel concludes his own tenure with the completion of a cycle of his predecessor’s symphonies. The Orchestra salutes that achievement with this release of his critically acclaimed performances: The Complete Mahler Symphonies, Live. All of these works were recorded live at Avery Fisher Hall, and many were featured on the Orchestra’s nationally broadcast radio series. For the symphonies requiring vocal forces, the Philharmonic was joined by renowned soloists and leading choral ensembles.
