Five years after the recording of the groundbreaking Officium, the Hilliard Ensemble and Jan Garbarek returned to the Austrian monastery of St Gerold to renew, in the words of singer John Potter, their "encounter with the unknown." The resultant, very beautiful, double-album, "Mnemosyne", is wider in scope than its predecessor, and the improvised component of the music is expanded. Garbarek’s saxophone weaves through and soars over the four-man a capella Hilliard Ensemble, making for a brilliant and unique sound. The repertoire spans 22 centuries, from the "Delphic Paean" of Athenaeus to the "Estonian Lullaby" of Veljo Tormis, to folk songs and fragments from North and South America, Spain, Scotland, and Russia. “Mesmerizing trance music, from ancient to the future.” – Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times
