That the two great Mozart (1756-179I) piano concertos on this recording are no longer novelties to the music loving public is a tribute to the rediscovery of the "forgotten Mozart" that has taken place in the last three decades. The twenty-seven keyboard concertos by Mozart, outside of five "baby works" which as a child prodigy he arranged from music by other composers, stand as one of the supreme bodies of composition in a single form. For a long time after Mozart's death, only a handful of them were favored by pianists, just as after Beethoven's death, four or five piano sonatas were selected to stand for his entire output in this form. And in both cases, the loss to the music lover was considerable.
