Born October 20, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois began his career as a singer in various Baptist Churches in the Chicago area. Around the age of three, Eddie's cousin, Bernice Benson, who played piano at Eddie's mother's church, began teaching Eddie how to play piano. He played by ear. He continued to watch his cousin play the piano and tried to emulate her.
