When L8LOOMER (born Broderick Batts) selected his moniker, pronounced “Late Bloomer,” he thought he had simply found the words to describe his personal frustration. But had also unknowingly tapped into an often-unspoken universal experience. In a world constantly telling us to try harder, do gooder, and of course—buy this, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t feel like they’re behind the curve in some aspect of their life. But why? That’s the attitude he brings into his debut EP SOULM8S.

With assists from Banoffee, Anne Dereaux, Doja Cat, and TEN Music Group labelmate Erik Hassle, the Los Angeles musician creates a musical atmosphere full of pop instrumentals, and heavy percussion which serve as a backdrop for his silky alto and rapid-fire flow. Even at his most reserved, like the apprehensive romantic slow jam “</3” (“I hate being in love, it makes me insecure, I’m worth way more than they can afford.”) there’s a gleeful sense of stereotypes being rapidly dismantled. Who can say you’re behind when there’s nothing to live up to? Masculinity, commercialism, and daily city life—it’s all up for grabs. L8LOOMER even calls his own standing into question, with a series of tongue-in-cheek lines that disregard the idea that slick living and success have to go hand-in-hand. (“Everything I do seems to blow up in my face, just like a Samsung”/ “You date a musician I put the funk in dysfunctional”). Therein lies his power. No matter how dark the moment, no matter how step the obstacle, L8LOOMER never stops feeling the joy, feeling the love, and promoting the good vibes. Late bloomer no more, L8LOOMER is coming on strong.
