An indication of the composers Pachelbel himself admired can be seen in his 1699 dedication of the Hexachordum Apollinis to both his Vienna contemporary Ferdinand Tobias Richter and to the venerable Lübeck master Buxtehude, a significant juxtaposition. His admiration, however, did not prevent him from imposing his own musical personality. Pachelbel's geographical situation, midway between Vienna and Lübeck, was mirrored in his musical situation, equally distant from harmonic subtleties of Richter as from the passionate vehemence of Buxtehude.
