"The music of "Primal Blue" springs from no less a basic and sacred sanctuary of the heart than the gutter-bucket, country blues of Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, or John Lee Hooker, but the music to be heard and savored on this recording is an asphalt canyon, bebop blues. Late night sippin'-and-trippin' music in its original spawning grounds, these blues are no less precious and vital in today's evermore robotized music scene than Bessie Smith's most visceral wails.
