The legendary debut album by one of rock’s greatest bands is finally remixed, expanded and seriously updated. Released as The Who Sings My Generation in the U.S. with one track change months after being issued in the U.K. as simply My Generation, this classic album has never been previously released in real stereo anywhere and has never been remastered from the original masters. With the release of this special 2 CD Deluxe Edition, these problems are resolved, and the package has now been expanded from its original twelve tracks to 30. There are 6 previously unreleased tracks, and the album’s minimal graphics have been expanded exponentially and include three sets of liner notes.
First, the music: this set includes the 24 songs from the debut 1964, ’65 and ’66 recording sessions of The Who, produced by Shel Talmy. This includes their hit signature songs “I Can’t Explain,” “The Kids Are Alright” and, of course, “My Generation.” For the latter, we’ve included the stereo version, the original session instrumental session track as well as the monaural, which — like “A Legal Matter” — includes overdubs not on the stereo version. Among the rare recordings here are: “Instant Party Mixture,” a previously unreleased Pete Townshend composition; a hot version of Bo Diddley’s “I’m A Man,” originally on the U.K. LP but deleted in the U.S. in favor of “Circles;” an alternate vocal/lyric version of the anthemic “Anyhow Anywhere Anyway” previously only released in France; the previously unreleased full-length versions of “The Good’s Gone” and “I Don’t Mind;” an a cappella version of “Anytime You Want Me;” and a version of the Motown song “Leaving Here” with a previously unreleased Daltrey vocal.
