The symphony is in five movements, the last three played without pause. The Ninth Symphony had a most successful world premiere by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Eugene Mravinsky's direction at the inaugural concert of its twenty-fifth season. The symphony enjoyed a wide and warm reception in Russia, though some criticized the composer for his failure "to reflect the true spirit of the Soviet people." For such a charming tale, Lieutenant Kije-Suite, Prokofiev devised music full of humor and high spirits. The music, based on the film Lieutenant Kije, is a five-movement suite. It received its first performance in Moscow, and has been a popular concert work throughout the world ever since.
