The legendary Roscoe Mitchell has recorded a number of revered albums with his influential Art Ensemble of Chicago outfit, but it is also is work a leader and, here as a soloist that many fans find him even more intriguing; swirling with creativity and freedom. Solo is another in a series of solo saxophone sessions. While not just on saxophone, Mitchell is also performing on various other instruments: percussion, flute, etc.. This lengthy session features some wonderfully long and some beautifully brief pieces; but overall the tracks show diversity, strength, and even humor at times. Mitchell's ability to sustain particular notes, particularly on the lovely "The Kyper Belt", which moves softly with elements of flute, wind chimes and percussion. Then there are pieces like "Tech Ritter and the Megabytes" which encompass Mitchell's excellent improvisational skills and turn this pathless journey into a well-guided tour. Solo is a powerful documentation of one of the best improvisers of the last century and beyond.
