Janacek Philharmonic, dir. Petr Kotik
Thomas Buckner (baritone)
Muhal Richard Abrams (piano)
Roscoe Mitchell (saxophone)
Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell are two of the leading musical champions in the world of modern improvisation. They have created new forms and sound worlds that challenge the identities of both classical and jazz music. Spectrum
is the first recording to showcase the music of Abrams and Mitchell in an orchestral setting with Abrams' composition, Mergertone
. The work was commissioned by the Ostrava Center for New Music and was premiered by the Janacek Philharmonic in 2007.
This recording also features an improvisation by Abrams and Mitchell, Romu
, as well as a piece by Mitchell for baritone and orchestra entitled Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City
ReviewsThis is an important recording and it confirms my conviction as to the importance of these two composer-improvisers. It should expand the musical consciousness of all listeners, regardless of whether one comes out of the improviser camp, the orchestral camp, the all-music camp, or no camp at all.
