Throughout their illustrious and very separate careers, Syl and Jimmy had never recorded together. They had wanted to do a record together for years, but neither wanted to be “in charge” of the project nor defer to the other, so it stayed an idea rather than becoming an actuality. Through the persistence of producer John Tiven, Two Johnsons Are Better Than One was finally recorded. On the CD, Syl and Jimmy share vocal duties and play guitar, and the result if one of the finest soul/blues albums of the year. Of special interest is Syl’s reprise of his late 60s hit “Is It Because I’m Black.” Even popular recording artist Syleena Johnson (Syl’s daughter) makes an appearance.
