Revealing Relationship
"Piano Sonatas by W. A. Mozart with the freely additionally composed accompaniment of a second piano" is the title of an imposing collection of rare curiosities. The great Nordic piano romanticist Edvard Grieg reveals his relation to the greatest genius of Viennese classicism in this interpretation by the Piano Duo Trenkner & Speidel, which has created so many a release sensation on MDG. As an encore on this double CD: Grieg's own Peer Gynt suites in four-hand versions by the master himself.

Important Input
It was presumably the piano teacher in Grieg who during the 1870s hit upon the idea to compose a second piano part for the Mozart sonatas. "By chance they came into the concert hall, and the story sounded surprisingly good." Understandably, Grieg's publisher brusquely rejected them. "The world expects original compositions from you!" Had he simply overlooked the great Grieg input in them?

New Brilliance
Grieg did not tamper with the "original" but invented amazing counterpoints for the second piano: it plays a supporting role with its fine accents and underscores developments, so that the overall sound is lent new brilliance. Mozart's "Sonata facile" in Tristan's late romantic clothing!

Interpretive Insights
The liberties taken by the composer were too much for the Grieg biographer and Mozart scholar Karl Gustav Fellerer, who wrote in 1942, "Mozart is forced into Grieg, and the result is a distortion of the original." Since today we know Mozart's piano sonatas in their original sound picture, we are wiser than Fellerer. From Grieg's interpretation we learn not only a great deal about the fin de siècle; his Mozart sonatas are for us (new) music from the nineteenth century

Rousing Renderings
Six MDG recordings featuring the Trenkner & Speidel Duo have been released on MDG, and all of them have inspired genuine storms of enthusiasm: "Phenomenal teamwork!" (NMZ on the Bach/Reger CD); "A complete delight! Bravo!" (Fanfare on the Bach/Reger CD), "A gripping listening experience - highly compelling"(FAZ on the Schubert CD).
